Building on Our Progress in Accessibility

In 2026, 11 GWL Realty Advisors-managed properties achieved Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC), bringing the managed portfolio total to 42. Since supporting the program’s original pilot in 2021, GWLRA’s property teams have worked with our clients to create more welcoming, inclusive and accessible spaces.

This year brought an important first: 56 Wellesley Street West in Toronto earned RHFAC Gold. The program’s highest certification requires a score of at least 80 per cent, access beyond minimum building codes and measures such as visual and audible fire alarms in public and private areas, as well as audio accessibility and communication-enhancement technologies – supporting people with diverse mobility, vision and hearing needs.

That progress was also recognized with two 2026 Buildings Without Barriers honours. The Culture of Accessibility Award reflects strong employee engagement and interest in accessibility, with 128 staff members completing the training to date. The Commitment Award recognizes our broad participation and continued progress in rating properties across the managed portfolio – and marks our second time receiving the honour, following our 2024 win.

Accessible buildings strengthen communities by enabling people of all ages and abilities to participate more fully where they work, live, shop and connect. For owners and investors, accessibility can broaden a property’s appeal, enhance the user experience and reduce the risk of costly retrofits as expectations and requirements evolve. By identifying barriers and opportunities, accessibility ratings also support informed capital planning, long-term resilience and the continued market relevance of the assets we manage.

These achievements reflect a shared focus. We thank our property teams for championing this work, our tenants for supporting the certification process, and the building owners who trust GWLRA to manage their assets responsibly and with a long-term view. Their partnership makes meaningful progress possible.
